In truth, all you need is a good diet plan and a sensible exercise regime. If you want to lose weight fast, then give yourself at least a month and not a week to see results. Shedding more than one or two pounds a week is not healthy unless of course you are morbidly obese.

If you are middle aged and have generally led a sedentary lifestyle, then now is the time to start exercising. If you are still working tight hours in the office, then come up with something creative. If you love dancing, then why not dedicate 5 minutes of your time and dance in the morning while your coffee is brewing? Or, when you're running errands, don't forget to park your car at the farthest distance so that you have no choice but to walk a few extra feet. This will not only help you by making you trim and in tip top shape but this will also prevent any cardiovascular disease from developing in the future.

But even if you do all kinds of exercise routines but fail to sleep for a few hours - at least six hours if you are a middle aged adult - then your body's metabolism will slow down and you will feel sluggish. This in turn will prevent you from exercising and accomplishing anything. So if you don't have other pressing matters to attend to and you feel sleepy enough, go to bed early and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start the day. If you feel like you don't need a cup of coffee to start the day, then that means that you've had an adequate amount of sleep - which is always a good thing.

Another good idea in order to lose the weight is to keep a diary - a food and exercise diary to be precise. At the end of the week, analyze your food patterns and the amount of time you dedicate to exercising. This way, you'll know where you are lacking and you can lose more weight in the long run.

Here are some small things you can do in order to lose more weight effectively and properly:

  • Take the escalator instead of using the lift. If you do this, you will burn up to a hundred calories in just five minutes.
  • While waiting for the bus, try standing up instead of sitting down. This will help you burn more calories.
  • Do your household chores the old fashion way. Rake the leaves instead of using the leaf blower and wash your own car instead of driving up to the nearest carwash station.
  • Chew sugarless gum. Studies show that 11 calories are burned within an hour just by chewing gum. Also, gum will help you prevent from indulging in harmful vices like smoking.
  • Take your time with your kids. Go with them to the nearest park or play baseball with them. This will not only foster good relationships, but you will also burn calories as well. If you don't have kids, play with your nieces or nephews instead.
